Spacious Mind, The: The Drifter

The Spacious Mind formed back in 1991, releasing a number of albums since although I am rather late to the party. They became one of the leading psychedelic/space rock bands at the time and I believe they are still going strong and have a new album titled The No. 4 Or 5 Gravy Band. In 2018 the band released a compilation titled The Drifter consisting of rare tracks, including two live tracks originally on CD-r. Our friends at Trail Records do an amazing job with all things psychedelic and this compilation is no exception. The band plays hypnotic and trippy psychedelic music channeling early Floyd and the German Kraut scene for inspiration. The music flows so beautifully and like sand through an hour glass, it has a totally mesmerizing effect.

There are a total of six songs beginning with the almost fifteen minute “The Drifter”. A slow pulsating bass and keyboard settle in as a warble effect tremors through the soundscape adding a distorted euphoria. Psychedelic and trippy guitar, repeating bass figures and organ builds. The sound becomes quite dreamy along with softly sung vocals to further develop the mood. Just an excellent opening track. With “Euphoria, Euphoria” a moody and quiet start quickly builds in intensity before morphing into a smooth flowing groove and washes of trippy guitar chords. The flow is totally hypnotic as the fourteen minutes seem to fly by. It’s a very dreamy and not overly heavy listen, as is much of the album although the guitar does get heavier at times. The guitar and bass work are exemplary. With “The Players In The Band” a very moody effects laden beginning eventually lead to a slow acoustic led groove and slightly distorted and dreamy lead vocals. This gives off more Pink Floyd inspired moments. Another solid yet mellow space rock tune and one of the catchiest on the disc. There are three more nuggets equally as compelling so you can be assured there is no filler here.

Sure there are many bands inhabiting this niche these days but The Spacious Mind do psychedelic/space rock as well as anyone. Highly recommended indeed.
