Mateus, Abelita: Vivenda

Brazilian musician Abelita Mateus moved from San Paulo, Brazil to New York in 2012 and there she has cultivated her love of jazz mixing it with her South American roots, creating her debut album titled Vivenda.

The clean and crisp sounds of Samba begin the disc with the title track. The percussion has that tropical feel and Mateus lays down a wonderful piano solo. It’s a feel good vibe, deep and rich with a smooth flow all punctuated with Mateus’ warm lead vocals. The acoustic guitar playing is also very good. An excellent acoustic guitar intro highlights the joyful “Capim” where Mateus has the voice of an angel and her piano playing is again wonderfully melodic and inspiring. Again, special mention must be made of Lubambo’s superb work on acoustic guitar. On the light and airy “Discussão-Brigas Nunca Mais”, trumpet, piano and acoustic guitar trade solo spots while still maintaining a great flow. More fine trumpet can be heard on both “Saudades Do Brasil” and the gentle “Esquinas” where the acoustic guitar also shines, but really, each musician is important to the whole and let me tell you this band sounds great.

Mateus’ rich musical heritage marries well with her love of jazz, the two merging into one big, beautiful sound. Of course it helps to have some excellent musicians in the band, of this there can be no doubt. Recommended.
