Henderson, Scott: People Mover

Veteran guitarist Scott Henderson has been a busy man since bursting on the scene in the early '80s as a sideman for Jean Luc Ponty, Chick Corea, Jeff Berlin, and Joe Zawinul, and has since had a very successful career co-leading Tribal Tech as well as leading his own various jazz & blues ensembles. His latest album People Mover sees the guitarist leading a trio that includes bassist Romain Labaye and drummer Archibald Ligonniere, and features new instrumental compositions that combine jazz, blues, rock, and funk styles.

Opening track "Transatlantic" allows Henderson to pull out some of his formidable fusion chops, and though he's always been a strikingly original player, there are a few nods to the late, great Allan Holdsworth in this opening gem. "Primary Location" blends fiery rock and blues, the rhythm team locking in deep and allowing the leader to slice in with some biting solos. The title track is full of groove, Labaye's bass thick and muscular, Scott's lead lines bleeding blues and a touch of funk, while "Satellite" allows the leader's jazz side to come out and play, a must hear for any Wes Montgomery, George Benson, and Pat Metheny fan. Other highlights include the atmospheric slow builder "Blue Heron Boulevard", the savage blues rock rave-up "Syringe", and the screaming lead guitar excursions and dizzying bass runs that permeate the groove laden jazz-rocker "Happy Fun-Sing".

Lots of variety here on People Mover, and it's clearly obvious that these three players have really locked in with each other after a lot of time spent on the road. Scott Henderson has himself a fantastic trio who have really delivered a mighty fine album here. Don't miss it!
