Jet Black Sea: The Overview Effect
Netherlands’ progressive rock duo Jet Black Sea formed in 2013 by Adrian Jones (Nine Stones Close) and Michel Simon. I first heard the band upon reviewing their 2017 album titled Absorption Lines which I liked a lot. In 2018 they released their third effort titled The Overview Effect. Also appearing are Adrian O’Shaughnessy (vocals) and Christiaan Bruin (drums on track 3).
The album consists of just three tracks although the epic title track is over thirty-five minutes. A haunting atmosphere of ethereal sounds and effects gives way to electronic elements and crisp percussion. It’s all very moody and mysterious and quite spacey with droning guitar chords. The build is slow and involving letting the listener absorb the sound. The full beat starts along with vocals which are excellent. The music remains quite trippy with shard like bursts of guitar and more electronic sounds. Whispered vocals create an unsettling feel and the guitar carries a Floyd-like atmosphere. Just an excellent track. The first track “Escape Velocity” begins with lingering keyboards and electronics before the heavy riffs start. The lead vocals soar magnificently making for another strong tune. The disc ends with “Home (E.D.L.)", a more poignant offering with pretty piano and soaring lead guitar.
The Overview Effect is a very strong effort from one of the more interesting newish bands to come under the prog umbrella. Very much looking forward to hear where the band goes next.
Another highly recommended release from Freia Music.
