Going Up North: Stealing From The Thieves

Here’s a new band coming at you from Bergen, Norway. Going Up North has recently released its debut album titled Stealing From The Thieves. The band consists of Atle St. Jensen (guitar, vocals), Hjalmar Rongevaer III (drums), Jan S. Vadseth (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Endre Aasebø (bass, vocals, guitar, keyboards).

On the label’s website it cites Led Zeppelin and The Velvet Underground as potential reference points and I do a hear a little of that, particularly the latter. This is a fun and upbeat album, some punk influences with a definitive ‘60s/’70s pop rock vibe. This band really lays down some great hooks beginning with the super catchy “Love Is Strong”. The vocals and riffs will have your feet tapping and the melody is as ear catching as it gets. A punk rock sense of urgency energizes “I Don’t Care”, another catchy tune complete with horns and a taste of early Clash. More ’70s hard rock/alternative sounds can be heard on “Autogol” where the riffs leap out of the speakers and the swirls of keyboards and guitar plus the pounding rhythm section make for a real head thumper. “The Night Was Dark” eases off the heavier sounds with a balanced mixture of acoustic and electric guitar. Another tasty melody to be had. I hear a bit of The Pogues in the lead vocals in “Romeo’s Blues”, another catchy acoustic based track. The outstanding melodies continue down the rest of the album as this band knows how to lay down a hook.

Stealing From The Thieves is an excellent debut album and should appeal to rock, alternative and punk fans in equal measure. Another highly recommended release from Apollon Records.
