Electric Family, The: Ice Cream Phoenix " Resurrection
What better way to re-release your music than on your own record label. That is exactly what Tom Redecker has done with The Electric Family’s Ice Cream Phoenix " Resurrection. Redecker and Lothra Gärtner co-founded Sireena Records in 2000,specializing in releasing music that has been lost in the vaults, sometimes even forgotten. Originally released in 2003, Ice Cream Phoenix now comes as an expanded edition with three extra tracks. The band is relatively new to me as I first became familiar with their music on their 2017 release titled Terra Circus, an excellent album to be sure.
It should come as no surprise Ice Cream Phoenix " Resurrection is an absorbing listen, highly varied and melodic showcasing the band’s unique sense of adventurism. Strums of acoustic guitar begin “Solid Structure” having a sort of folky psychedelic vibe. It’s a slow hypnotizing build, really quite haunting including the excellent lead vocals. Some of the parts are pretty trippy, especially the burst of heavy guitar. Bluesy Americana can be heard on “Last Phase Of The Moon” as well as a bit of progressive rock. The keyboard layers and biting guitar work are definite highlights. The longest track is the excellent “Landmark Visions” beginning with effects and samples before acoustic guitar takes the listener through a thunder storm. This is moody storytelling at its finest. The edgy guitar exploits and echo effects are really cool. Perhaps my favourite track is a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Careful With That Axe, Eugene”, filled with trippy angst and psychedelic friction. The tension builds in the synths and guitar and blood curdling scream-like sounds add to the tune’s threatening tone. The original album ended with the short “Axechild- The End”, a two minute slice of serene and smoothly flowing psychedelic music. There are three bonus tracks including an alternate version of “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” , just as mind bending as the first version. The live account of “Landmark Visions” should be well received from psych and spacerock fans and the sound quality is excellent.
I highly recommend Ice Cream Phoenix, a genre spanning album that sounds absolutely superb. If you didn’t get it the first time around now is the time. Another fine release from Sireena Records.
