Pressor: Weird Things
Pressor is a doom/sludge/stoner outfit based out of Kostroma, Russia. The band have four releases to their credit, including their latest titled Weird Things (2018). The band’s sound is heavy (that might be an understatement) and intense, all the elements that make awesome sludge are present and accounted for. Heavy guitars " check, pounding drums and bass " check, intense vocals- check, you get the idea, this is not music to put on for a Sunday stroll. Or maybe it is but I digress. Also present are spacey synths and effects, so a bit of space rock perhaps.
There are four tracks and a total of twenty-eight minutes of music beginning with the first track “Heavy State” and I can tell you the title says a lot. This is some heavy stuff. Trippy synths and drones set the mood and then a massively dense guitar riff is laid down with a take no prisoners attitude. This is instrumental slow plodding doom of the highest order. The title track starts out fast but changes tempo a few times. The riffs are much fuzzier, merging into a stoner metal sound. The vocals are half sung/shouted but fit the sound as his deadpan delivery works well here. The bone shattering riffs in “Tripping Deep”, the disc’s longest track, will reach your very core. Some of the progressions are pretty head turning and I really dig the distant sounding vocals, not as much shouting as in the second track. The last song is another heavy burner, all pounding drums, intense guitar attacks and solid vocals.
I have been exposed to some fine music coming out of Russia lately and Pressor continues that trend with Weird Things, an excellent foray into sludge/stoner metal.
Thanks to the Addicted Label for making this music available for all of us to enjoy.
