The New Roses: Nothing But Wild

I need to start this review with a confession. I’ve been wasting my life and for that I can only say sorry. I mean how can I have survived the last nine years without knowing, or shouting at random passers by about The New Roses?? Nothing But Wild is their fourth album in that time and it’s hit me as though someone just propelled a stick of dynamite up each of my nostrils, lit them and stood back as “Soundtrack Of My Life” and “Can’t Stop Rock & Roll” exploded with devastating effect. They hit like modern day Lynyrd Skynyrd snorting a line of Molly Hatchet as Aerosmith crash the party and demand to stick Thunder on the stage. Add in that “Down By The River” takes you into the hard rocking, melodic thinking world of the underrated No Sweat as though they just kicked the shit out of The Quireboys and we’re not just off and running through the first three songs on this album, but hurtling along at breathtaking speed without a care for what may or may not get caught up in the maelstrom. The low slung thump and grind of “Nothing But Wild” ensures that neither the quality or the power possessed by this quartet shows any signs of dissipating, an urgency that you seldom hear outside of early Guns N’ Roses strapped liberally onto the thighs of Rod Stewart as he waggles his leopard print skintight trouser totting posterior right at your nose.

With all of those influences churned, smoothed and then spread liberally - but with enough spice to burn your lips for hours afterwards - the question that’s begging to be asked is whether The New Roses come from the American side of the Atlantic, or the British? So when you find out that this gritty, bluesy, beauty of an album has been delivered by a group of German ear destructors, then you have to wonder just what’s currently going down in the land that’s better known for giving us the likes of Accept, Scorpions and Primal Fear. Whatever it is, let’s scoop it up and treasure it, because not many bands have thirteen songs as good as those brought together here; the pop and pout of the smoother “Glory Road” and Americana-ing call to the cause that is “Meet Me Half Way” a clever change of semi-acoustical pace, while “As The Crows Flies” is an insistent shock to the system that simply reboots the senses, and then some.

From singer/guitarist Timmy Rough to drummer Urban Berz and from bassist Hardy (oooh kiss me!) to guitar slasher Norman Bites, The New Roses simply don’t put a foot wrong. Nothing But Wild? That’s exactly how this album has left me feeling!
