Polish acoustic/electronic artist and composer Joanna Duda is another new name to me but here I am spinning her new disc simply titled Keen. The artist uses both digital and acoustic piano, prepared samples and beat machines to achieve what is really a creative and bold statement of avant leaning experimentalism.
The press release describes her music as “an acoustic-electronic collage composed of long-maturing layers of prepared acoustics, from which the instrumentarium was created with a distinctive, integral sound.” Usually I don’t like to use such a long quote in my reviews but I feel this to be a good summation of her work. Duda has a very unconventional approach to song structure and that’s where her creative juices really begin to flow. “Marc” begins the disc with moments of angular dissonance in her note choices for the piano and the electronics have a chopped up and fragmentary sound. It’s weird and trippy and completely off the wall. A repeating picked acoustic guitar pattern and strummed chords make an avant statement as the tempo slows into well organized chaos. The beats and samples are well thought out creating detailed layers of minimalism but when added together forms a rather complex web of sound. “Fugue” is even more experimental as stark notes and scattered beats form an interesting sound palette. The rest of the disc is just as unusual. Because of its inherent quirkiness Keen will certainly be an acquired taste, likely appealing to the more open minded music fan.
Duda completely resides outside the box of conventional sound and structure, travelling the much less travelled road of avant leaning creativity. For that, she is to be commended.
