“Mighty Quinn” may be the name of a 1967 Bob Dylan song and a 1989 film starring Denzel Washington, but it’s also the latest musical vehicle for Quinn Walker -- a singer/songwriter versed in rock, funk, soul, gospel, R&B and hip-hop. He made a name for himself with a song that aired on the ABC-TV medical comedy-drama Scrubs (“My Road”).
Taking the name “Mighty Quinn” and adding a rotating trio of musicians known as “The Oakland Ronin,” Walker goes punk on this self-titled debut. Unable to play an instrument, thanks to muscle disorder in both arms and wrists, Walker pours himself into this album vocally, delivering lines with true punk spirit as if his survival depends on each word.
In case you're wondering, “Ronin,” according to the band, “describes Samurai warriors who did not follow a specific political lord -- especially guns for hire in ancient Japan, much like the gun-for-hire situation of the band.”
Fueled by leftist social justice messages -- as well as lyrics about love, loss, addiction and depression -- these 12 accessible, high-energy songs erupt in less than 34 minutes. Which is just about right for an album like this.
