Sipiagin, Alex: NoFo Skies
Born in Russia and now residing in Long Island, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin has been involved in the jazz scene for many years and has worked with many top notch artists and has quite an extensive solo discography. On his latest album titled NoFo Skies, a tribute to the North Fork of Long Island, Sipiagin has gathered some familiar faces including Chris Potter (tenor saxophone), Will Vinson (alto saxophone), John Escreet (piano, keyboards), Matt Brewer (bass), Eric Harland (drums) and Alina Engibaryan (vocal).
The opening track “Rush” is in a word, breathtaking. The drums, bass and piano set the table for mind blowing saxophone and trumpet, each beguiling the other in a sort of abstract dance. Changing meters and bursts of horns over slinky bass lines converge in a mesmerizing trumpet solo that will easily impress any fan of the instrument. The ensuing solo piano spot is equally as rewarding, just great players all around. Some breezier moments lighten the mood on the absorbing title track featuring a wonderful tenor sax solo and some utterly beautiful trumpet work. And I didn’t even mention the piano and drums, you’ll just have to listen for yourself. Dreamy vocals and keyboards give “Recovery” an ethereal quality while a flurry of trumpet and sax continue the aural assault but with softer moments as well. A sly R&B groove can also be detected as the keyboards soften the background and the bass solo provides another ‘wow’ moment. There are many more highlights as each song has something to offer.
NoFo Skies is one of the best jazz albums I have heard this year. Of this there can be no doubt. Released on Blue Room Music.
