Walker, Mark: You Get What You Give

Here’s a fiery album for you. Grammy award drummer Mark Walker has played on so many albums it’s hard to keep count. Now he has released his first solo effort titled You Get What You Give. The Berklee professor has toured extensively with a wide array of musicians and after listening to his first album it is easy to understand why. This guy is really something behind the kit.

The album contains six originals and four standards with Walker and his talented band mates excelling at their craft.”Candombe In Blue” is a Mark Walker original and begins the disc in a most delightful way. The deep Latin groove has passion and power, the percussion runs deep with this one. Some incredible fretwork from guitarist Tim Miller followed by Alain Mallet’s equally as good piano solo and you have an outstanding opening track. With “Speak No Evil” its Diego Urcola’s flugelhorn that is the highlight but the rhythm section of Walker and Oscar Stagnaro on bass is also on fire, really cooking throughout. “Akumbia” is more gentle and subdued with a real chilled out vibe highlighted by melodic organ and another excellent guitar solo. A drum intro begins Coltrane’s “Moment’s Notice” and is coloured with Mike Tucker’s vibrant tenor saxophone. Simply outstanding musicianship, including an ear opening acoustic bass solo courtesy of David Zinno. My favourite piece is the almost ten minute “Andalusian Sunrise” which has the band playing furiously one minute and the next very nuanced and delicate. This one has the band at their creative peak.

You Get What You Give has so much going for it; great melodies, superb musicianship and a feel good groove that will put a smile on any jazzer’s face. I highly recommend it.
