Candy: Super-Stare (7” Single)
If you’ve been dying to hear Candy’s new album, I’ve got some bad news: this isn’t it. Before you get all weird and run off, however, you might want to check out this short preview of what’s coming. I’ll save more detailed remarks for when the full-length comes out, but in the meantime, let me say that the first song “Super-Stare” is awesome. The song shows off the band’s knack for tying together the brutal strains of hardcore with a riff-centered style that would make even the most hardened sludge / doom fan proud. I was also impressed with the way the song basically falls apart about half way through and then shifts over into something a bit more melodic and melancholy. When the sludgy riff starts back up, you’re ready for more and the band gives you another minute or so of quality heaviness. Compared to “Super-Stare,” the second track “Win Free Love” should feel like a letdown, but it really isn’t. Sure, the song has fewer layers and takes fewer risks, but it strikes hard and doesn’t let go until the end.
I’m not certain when Candy’s new album will come out, but this single is should hold over excited fans for a while. The band is currently on a US tour. This definitely not the last time you’ll hear about Candy.
