Roussak, Andrew: Storm Warning

Many years ago I reviewed the progressive metal band Dorian Opera and their Crusade 1212 disc. That was my first and only experience with the band and I thought the results were quite good and their future promising. I assume the band has disbanded, although I can’t say for certain, but their keyboard player Andrew Roussak has a new album under his belt. The disc is titled Storm Warning and he plays everything himself except for lead vocals and guitar solos on three tracks. The disc begins with the solid rocker “Enter Code” with its heavily synthesized intro of effects developing into some excellent piano and Moog. Some good riffs to be had as well, Roussak is certainly a formidable musician. The urgent rockers “Bringing Peace And Progress” and “Left Alone Outside” bring an ample amount of energy with excellent guitar riffs, organ embellishments and another fine Moog solo. The all out keyboard attack of “Regata Storica” is both catchy and technically impressive as Roussak shows his skill on organ, Moog, piano and more. His Emersonian approach is quite defined in this one. “Chasing Shadows” is the first track to feature vocals and Nadia Ayche has a wonderful voice and the accompanying piano and orchestrations are quite lovely as is Oli Weislogel’s guitar solo. The title track features heavy slabs of organ and is another keyboard heavy offering.

Storm Warning is an impressive third album from Roussak. Fans of Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson will want to give this a try. A Melodic Revolution Records release.
