The Wildhearts: Diagnosis
After a decade away from the studio, the return of The Wildhearts with the Renaissance Men album may well be looked back on as the event of 2019. Chart success, sold out tours and festival triumphs ensued but as if all that wasn’t enough, now we have Diagnosis, a six song mini-album featuring a title track that initially starred in the aforementioned renaissance, here alongside another five brand, spank me hard, new tracks!
It’s the title song which kicks things off, Ginger Wildheart’s personal, insightful, angry, heartfelt comment on the treatment of mental health by the authorities biting in hard and containing a message of positivity and self belief that’s simply too important to ignore. “God Damn” then slams into view, the touch and tone of guitarist and singer CJ standing tall and proud - the power-pop-punk that the man does so well both in and out of The Wildhearts seldom more potent than it is here. “That’s My Girl” finds drummer Ritch Battersby stepping up to the mic for the very first time and simply knocking it out of the park as he does so - the second single from the mini-album being a melodic punch to the guts that’ll leave you both breathless and grinning.
With “A Song About Drinking” combining a rivet gun explosion to the sweet chew of bubblegum pop and “The First Time” dripping with sugary but dirty as hell hooks, The Wildhearts mix of life and love, issues and ire, chaos and caresses has never been more impactful. Something that the profane, profound and pummelling “LOCAC” hammers home again, again and yet again. How can something so angry be so damn rewarding?
The Wildhearts remain as triumphant, relevant and important as ever. Fuck the diagnosis. This is the cure.
