Bowie, David: Montreal 1983 (2 CDs)
In 1993 David Bowie embarked on a ninety-three date world tour encompassing fifteen countries, with over two and a half million tickets sold. The tour was in support of the recently released Let’s Dance album. That album’s featured guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn was a last minute cancellation and in stepped long time Bowie cohort Earl Slick to take his place. This two CD set covers the July 13th show recorded at the Montreal Forum and Bowie and his band are in top form. What’s nice about this concert is many of the tunes feature subtly different arrangements like the rocking version of “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)”, the cool keyboard dominated intro on “Heroes” and the fantastic saxophone solo in “Let’s Dance”. Bowie’s voice is in fine form throughout the two hour concert, just listen to the great vocals on “Rebel Rebel” to get an idea of his superb talent.
More great tracks include the beautifully emotive and catchy “Life On Mars?”, the deliciously catchy “Sorrow”, the hard rock crunch of “Golden Years” and the super fun alternative funk of “Fashion”. Really, as this is David Bowie we are talking about their aren’t any bad song choices in my estimation. The track listing on the second disc is killer as well.
As with these unofficial releases the sound quality is sometimes in question but this is really quite good so no major complaints there.
This is an historical rock document from an artist and band at the top of their game. Oh man, the memories…
