Black Stone Cherry: Black To The Blues Volume 2

Prior to their latest album Family Tree, Kentucky hard rockers Black Stone Cherry took us back to their roots with Black To The Blues, an EP that paid homage to the blues heroes of yore who laid the foundations for most, if not all, of the rock music that followed. Charting highly and gaining near universal acclaim the EP surprised the boys in the band with its popularity so much that it possibly would have been more unexpected if they hadn’t decided to give us a follow up release.

In a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, Black To The Blues Volume 2 follows the same blueprint, with blues greats Freddie King, Robert Johnson, Otis Rush, Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James and Son House being respected through a selection of Cherrified blues standards. And maybe that’s the cleverest thing about this release and its predecessor, with all of the songs selected still alluding to their source strongly, while somehow hitting like brand new Black Stone Cherry numbers. From Freddie King’s “Big Legged Woman” through to Son House’s “Death Letter Blues”, the affection for these songs that this band clearly possesses comes through but then so does their desire to infuse them with the flavour that has seen Black Stone Cherry rise to being arena headliners in their own right.

Black To The Blues Volume 2 delivers exactly what it promises - Black Stone Cherry hollering and honking their way through some of the best tunes the blues has to offer. It’s a proposition which sounds exactly how you’d expect but that’s why it’s as good as it is.
