Voyager: Colours In the Sun
Hailing from the Australian Prog Metal scene are the band Voyager with their 7th studio album, Colours In The Sun (Season Of Mist). Catchy, powerful and Djenty at times, Voyager manages to blend all of these elements into a layered and diverse modern Prog Metal record.
Colours In The Sun is a genre weaving record that infuses 80’s styled clean vocals (some vocals almost remind me of Rick Astley), modern day technical fretboard prowess, Keytar solos, along with groove heavy and uber tight rhythmic dynamics. This 7th album finds the band defining their unique blend of sounds to make Colours In The Sun an enjoyable listen, from front to back.
Tracks like “Brightstar” have an 80’s Pop/New Wave Synth vibe to it (think Human League or Pet Shop Boys) until it transforms into a modern Djent style, where these two seemingly unrelated genres collide into something damn good with a catchy hook. “Entropy” features Leprous vocalist, Einar Solberg in the chorus with his crazy vocal range on full, glorious display. While “Saccharine Dream” displays their atmospheric and heavy side in one and is probably the standout track on Colours In The Sun for me. Djenty goodness, indeed!
I found this album to be a great way to close out 2019. Dynamic and rhythmic with pleasing vocals and heavy guitar groove is what you’ll get from Voyager on this 7th release. A band that is still virtually unknown, but with excellent material like this, hopefully that won’t be for much longer. This is a great album.
