Inventions: Logica
I have been familiar with Christiaan Bruin for some time now, first with his work under the Sky Architect umbrella, then some of his solo material and lastly his Inventions’ project. Bruin is the drummer for Sky Architect but he is an impressive all around musician as he tackles most of the instruments himself on his solos discs and that is the case here as well. The latest Invention album is titled Logica preceded by Curiosity (2018) and Meta (2017).
On the new album Bruin tackles a somewhat heady concept; how language can be described mathematically and of course the universe as well. He has taken a very logical approach to thinking about the big picture, ie. the universe, hence the album title. I suppose some music theory would help in understanding what Bruin is getting at here as it seems he has translated this orderly view of the universe in the way he has written and arranged the music. It is clear much thoughtfulness went into the end product as this album oozes class through all seven tracks.
This is also an album that is not so easily defined as Bruin has created his own unique musical pathway combining elements from many genres, although I do think progressive rock stretches across the disc. In the first track “Platonics”, an orchestral approach of strings and keyboards adds the key dramatics. It’s really quite a lovely little tune and very easy on the ears. Soft piano and strings begins the title track, the disc’s longest at over fifteen minutes. Narration is provided by Andy Rowe, delving into the concept as flutterings of flute take hold. Some excellent sax work from Theo Travis and heavier guitar chords set back in the mix adds an interesting sound dynamic. Ambient, classical, heavy rock and progressive are all touched upon. A slow groove with melodic guitar soloing highlights “Mind of God” while the somewhat grandiose “Beholder’s Eye” features melodic strings and enchanting acoustic guitar. Bruin’s vocals have a timbre not unlike Peter Gabriel, I really like his voice.
There is just so much to dig here; exquisite playing, memorable melodies and a creative flair are just a few things that come to mind. In a word " excellent.
A Freia Music release.
