Nick Grondin Group, The: A View Of Earth
Nick Grondin proves to be a wonderful guitarist on The Nick Grondin Group’s debut album A View Of Earth, this follows his debut album Songteller " The Jazz Orchestra Project released in 2009. On his new album Grondin has brought in some very talented musicians and the results are superb beginning with the album opening “Ships Passing”, a reflective and gentle piece with lovely acoustic and electric guitar and an excellent sax solo from Tucker Antell. Grondin also adds his voice to this one, along with female vocalist Aubrey Johnson and they complement each other rather nicely. Fabulous lead guitar in the upbeat “Everybody Wins”, along with great piano, saxophone, bass and trumpet makes for another outstanding cut. The band really plays with fervor on this one. The guitar and sax work weave around each other for some truly impressive instrumental fireworks. The drumming of Lee Fish also deserves special mention. The covers of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” are very nice. The former featuring serene jazz vocals, subtle background organ and sweet sax while the latter is a reflective, jazzy piece, reworked with an outstanding attention to detail. The guitar and piano solos are wonderfully sentimental. “So Close, So Far” adds some R&B flavours and is a showcase for the entire band as the sax and guitar really heat up. Another excellent track.
A View Of Earth is a finely crafted contemporary jazz album, made by an excellent jazz ensemble and featuring impeccable musicianship. Absolutely recommended.
