Obsidian Sea: Strangers

Here is some more fantastic doom metal, this time coming at you from Sofia, Bulgaria. The band is Obsidian Sea and they formed in 2009. After a four song demo released in 2010 they dropped their first full length platter Between Two Deserts in 2012. Their sophomore effort titled Strangers was released in March of this year.

While the band are certainly influenced by ‘70s heavy rock sounds they have carved out their own niche. In other words, this isn’t doom metal by the numbers, it is much more interesting than that. The trio also proves to be excellent musicians which can be heard in the lead off track “The Birth Of Fear”. Slow and heavy fuzz infested riffs and pummeling drums set the table for Avramov’s dynamic lead vocals including distant wails and sinister-like whispers. It’s a dynamic performance and a strong point throughout the disc. The guitar riffs and solo are indeed excellent. Moodier guitar atmospheres mix with awesome crunch in the dynamic “Every Heart Hides A Killer” and in “A Shore Without A Sea” surreal background Moog and slow chord progressions have a hypnotizing effect until the heavy fuzz begins in earnest. The featured guitar solo just might be the disc’s number one highlight. This dude has some great chops. Super addictive riffs and vocals highlight the catchy “Strangers” while the album ending “The Play” is a trippy slice of languid psychedelic metallic haze, equal parts mellow and heavy. The ‘70s rings true with this one.

Another great release courtesy of Ripple Music.
