Perdomo, Fernando: Out to Sea 2

Here's Fernando Perdomo with his second solo release of 2019, a blistering instrumental prog/fusion affair that's actually the sequel to 2018's Out to Sea. Out to Sea 2 features the multi-instrumentalist once again tackling guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, and percussion, with a handful of friends and The Out to Sea Band helping out on violin, sax, drums, and a few other instruments on a couple of tracks. Much of what's on display is upbeat, raucous, and fiery, chock full of energetic electric guitars, Mellotron, synths, acoustic guitars, and velvety bass. Symphonic prog lovers will instantly gravitate towards "Theme from "Dr. Leisure", "Five Four", "Seven Stars", and the Camel influenced "Stairway to the Sea", each one featuring a plethora of lush synths and Perdomo's melodic lead guitar lines. Fiery fusion cuts like "Super Woofer" and "Boing" set the testosterone level on max, while the gorgeous, Jeff Beck Blow By Blow styled tracks "Beautiful", "The Angels of Ardent", and "The Stratosphere" offer up some sublime guitar playing. There's also a few hard rockers, like "Saturday Night" and the furious closer "The Architect", the latter a tribute to the late Yes/Flash legend Peter Banks, and featuring a wealth of furious rhythms and sizzling lead guitar solos.

As strong as Out to Sea was, I think this second installment surpasses it. Out to Sea 2 is a stellar collection of dynamic instrumental songs that will please any progressive rock fan, and I for one can't wait to see what Fernando Perdomo has up his sleeve next.

Perdomo, Fernando: Out to Sea 2

My Score:

I agree with Pete that this is probably the best of the excellent trio of Out to Sea albums. This instrumental music manages to be interesting at the same time that it is just very relaxing on a surface level. It's not everyday you find a recording this accessible and intriguing at the same time. Great stuff!
