Janapati is not only the title of this album, but it also stands for the meeting of two astounding Indonesian guitar players, Dewa Budjana & Tohpati. Along with bassist Adhitiya Pratama, drummer Demas Narawangsa, and the Czech Symphony & Budapest Scoring Orchestra, the duo have created a lovely album blending elements of jazz, classical, prog, and traditional Indonesian music. Conceived as a pure acoustic album, Janapati sees Tohpati on his Takamine Nylon String guitar and Budjana with his Lowden Steel String axe. The duo lay down some masterful, sumptuous melodies on tracks like "Ratu Kanya", and the title cut, the orchestra swaying and soaring behind them as the liquid guitar lines weave, bob, and float around each other. The folky "Samudera Pasai" features just the two leaders, and it's a magical excursion into the beauty of the acoustic guitar, each player complementing each other perfectly. Other highlights include the grand, symphonic "D Romance", the harder rocking "Duology" (here the electric guitars come out for some Dixie Dregs inspired mayhem), and the playful "Children's Songs" medley, another entertaining effort for guitars and orchestra.
Hopefully, Janapati is the first of many collaborations between Dewa Budjana and Tohpati. This is a highly entertaining & enjoyable set of music that will have broad appeal to music lovers of all ages.
