Forest Field: Seasons
Forest Field is a Dutch melodic rock band led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Peter Cox. The recently released Seasons is the band’s fifth full length release. Also appearing on the album are Phil Vincent (all vocals) and Vince O’Regan who supplies a few ripping guitar solos on two tracks.
The album has a concept, or at least it’s a thematic piece (the album and song titles give it away). From what I can glean, the earth keeps spinning from one season to the next no matter which direction our lives take. That’s my general take anyways.
My first opinion of the album was its good but nothing really that special. Upon a couple of further listens things really started to click and the melodies began to etch their way into my brain. I also began to hear a little more complexity and nuance, not to say this stuff is genre bending but that really isn’t the point. Proggy melodic rock is what you get, kind of like a proggier version of Journey perhaps. Think along the lines of Toto, Boston and Styx to get a taste of the band’s style. The opening track “Delta Hours” is built upon super tasty keys and guitar. The riffs get a little edgier and the guitar solo is superbly crafted. The vocal melody in the chorus just might stick with you for days. With “Change The World” the melody is just as riveting but the chaotic bursts of heaviness add the occasional proggy touch. Some quirky effects also add some interest and the mellower acoustic guitar and keyboard section is really quite lovely. “Spring Is Coming” features crisp keyboards and slightly moody guitar riffs with another superb guitar solo. At first glance “Into The Lion’s Den” is familiar AOR but the underlying keyboards and excellent guitar gives this one a little more substance than your traditional melodic rock. Throughout the album its these subtle nuances, classy melodies and overall excellent musicianship that sets this apart from standard rock music. I look forward to hearing more of their music.
Released on the Rock Company label.
