Adam Larson Band, The: Listen With Your Eyes
My first foray into the world of saxophone phenom Adam Larson was his wonderful disc titled Selective Amnesia (2015) followed by the equally rewarding Second City (2017). Well, Larson is back with his sixth album as a band leader titled Listen With Your Eyes.
Larson’s rich and melodic sax tones can be heard throughout the disc beginning with the rousing opening in “Sleepers”. His soloing is melodic, intricate and finely detailed and really doesn’t let up through the entire track. Just a great young player. Rounding out the track you get Macbride’s powerful drumming and Almazan’s persistent acoustic piano along with a great solo spot. The choppy rhythmic forays and stellar instrumental interplay in “False Pageantry”, including some pretty cool synth work has this one bursting with creativity. Those synth sounds almost give it a fusiony vibe. Again, the sax solo is just superb. The slinky beats, scintillating solo sax and percolating electric piano in “Twenty-Something” and the catchy yet inventive sax stylings in “Invisible Barriers” are more stand out moments.
Adam Larson and his band are a formidable talent. Anyone at all interested in contemporary jazz needs to seek this out. A Ropeadope Records release.
