Buffalo Crows: Picnic at Buffalo Rock

This is one heavy album. Australian band Buffalo Crows debut album is titled Picnic at Buffalo Rock and man does it hit hard. Whether its doom, traditional metal, punk/garage, bluesy metal, or just heavy music in general this band has laid down some ferocious tracks.

The heaviness begins with “Devil’s on Fire”, a swamp metal extravaganza with varied vocals (enhanced, whispered) and fiery harmonica. Has a sort of tribal/outback sound that you would expect from an Australian band getting down to its roots. Very cool tune. “Rope N’ Ride has a punk rock attitude with the lyrics spitted out with venomous ferocity. The stop/start rhythms and heavy blues rock of “Deuteronomy” is another barn burner, especially in the song’s second half where it turns into a guitar drenched rocker. For a doomier sound try the epic and dramatic “The Nameless” with its intense growls and guitar fireworks and the slow burning riffs in “The Raven”, blending pagan and the occult, mixed with a heavy helping of doom. Probably the most ‘evil’ sounding track here. “Acid Reign” is one part mellow acoustic rock and two parts razor sharp guitar. The lyrics express frustration at the current state of our world.

Picnic at Buffalo Rock is a fine album of searing heaviness with a cool rootsy Australian vibe coursing through many of its tracks. I’m really digging this one.
