Wolftooth: Wolftooth

Wow, just wow! That’s the feeling I have after listening to the debut album of Indiana heavy metal outfit Wolftooth. The band’s main forte is the riff and they are indeed monstrous throughout the album. And yes, the band does borrow from the heavy metal temple of Black Sabbath but these gentlemen are in no means committing plagiarism. But man, this platter contains some heavy stuff. Although being heavy, it is also super catchy as these songs really have a habit of sticking around.

The first track “Blackbirds Call” begins with tasty acoustic and electric guitar before the massively heavy riffs and pummeling drums start. The riffs slow down giving the music a chance to breathe along with emotive solo guitar. The lead vocals give off a Blue Oyster Cult vibe. Another fantastic riff progression highlights the doomy “Aegaeon” where the riffs are powerful and the vocals remind me of classic Ozzy. The layered guitar riffs in “Sword Of My Father” recall the best of the’70s and the intense yet catchy riff attack in “White Mountain" are more great moments. Definitely recommended for fans of heavy guitar work. The galloping guitar riff in the Sabbath inspired “Frost Lord” is another album highlight. On the excellent and ear worm inducing “The Huntress”, Blue Oyster Cult again comes to mind, perhaps the Fire Of Unknown Origin era.

Wolftooth have made a stunning heavy metal/rock album that is purely addictive. You need to get your fix as soon as possible. A Ripple Music release.
