Disen Gage: The Screw - Loose Entertainment

I’ve recently been getting to know the work of Russian eclectic rock band Disen Gage, formed by guitarists Konstantin Mochalov and Yury Alaverdyan while in university. This is a review of the band’s debut release titled The Screw - Loose Entertainment which came out in 2004. Shortly after the album’s release Alaverdyan left the band to further his education in Sweden.

This is an excellent debut, very creative and pretty unique as compared to other bands of the time. I would say their biggest influence appears to be King Crimson as the guitar takes on aspects of Robert Fripp, which is never a bad thing. The tracks are quite varied beginning with the very spacey “Solaris” as the guitar and keyboards take time to build before the guitar develops into some pretty heavy tones. The beginning is almost ambient as the droning synths and guitar soften the edges before the heavier atmospheres take hold. The guitar work in “Komar” is superb, giving off a progressive fusion vibe. This tune exudes talent and is just plain fun to listen to. With “Augenapfel” the guitar is again a highlight. The band even dabble in a bit of hip hop (you know the turntable thing) as the guitar twists and turns through various styles. On “Kategeriin” the spoken word segment gives the tune a slightly disturbing feel to go along with its catchy guitar lines. Eastern mysticism can be heard in the exotic guitar motifs in “Arabia” while the heavy riffs and synths of “Chinagroove #7” makes for another engaging track.

The guitar playing really is a highlight throughout these fifteen tracks and is worth hearing just for that. A fine debut album from one of the better Russian progressive rock bands I have heard. Originally released on the RAIM label.
