Anvil: Legal At Last

One of life's great surprises is that it took Canada's Anvil until 2016 to actually release an album entitled Anvil Is Anvil. It's long been a mystery to me that every Anvil album isn't named Anvil Is Anvil like Led Zep and Peter Gabriel used eponymous titles for long periods. The great thing about Anvil is that you know exactly what's going to happen as soon as the needle hits the vinyl (other ways of reproducing sound are available.) No ill-advised trip into rap for these boys just pure unadulterated heavy metal usually with lyrical cliches with a large degree of infantilism. Legal At Last is at its heart at Anvil album and who would want anything else?

Obviously the core members of Steve 'Lips' Kudlow and Robb Reiner remain present and correct whilst Chris Robertson makes his third studio album appearance, his first being Anvil Is Anvil! As usual the uptempo tracks are the best. I could do without the "This Is Thirteen" rewrite of "Gasoline" and the Sabbath influenced "Plastic in Paradise" but the rest is pretty Anviltastic. The opening three tunes are, I suspect the ones which may make it into the band's live set but "I'm Alive" with its "Cat Scratch Fever" vibe is pretty smokin' as well.

The guitar work is excellent throughout and Robb Reiner as ever proves why he is one of the better drummers in metal although I would like to have had the drums further up in the mix. Ultimately Legal At Last will convert precisely nobody to the cause but will keep the long term faithful happy. In an ever changing world it remains good that Anvil is Anvil.
