Motive: Fight the World

People don’t pick up thrash albums hoping for subtlety. The music is brash and aggressive in ways that conjure up images of mosh pits rather than orchestra pits. Lyrically, things aren’t much different. Thrash bands typically offer pointed commentaries on everything ranging from politics to all other forms of human folly. Fortunately, the message is often couched in an endearing humor that is as ironic as it is critical.

Even though this album has been kicking around for a little while, it’s definitely a solid offering from a veteran thrash act that knows what they’re doing. If it’s been a while since you’ve enjoyed some raw thrashy goodness, then I suggest you check this one out. Things begin with the comical “Thrash Priest,” a song that playfully shifts religious traditions into the mosh pit. As moshing anthems go, it’s solid. Another highlight for me was “Boycott Your Boycott” because it did a nice job commenting on the ways people sometimes make things like activism into a competition. In “Digital Slave,” the band goes after the zombie-like qualities we all display when we’re more enthralled by our digital devices than our friends and families. The title track tackles similar issues but explores them from the perspective of someone trying to find even the slightest hope of freedom out there.

Motive has been going strong for just over twenty years and, like other classic thrash bands, they just want to keep making music that brings people to the pit. There’s nothing here you haven’t heard before but if you like thrash you won’t be disappointed.
