Silverthorne: Tear The Sky Wide Open

The one and only lament I have towards UK rock legends Thunder continuing their reformed renaissance is the demise of The Union, a band that guitarist Luke Morley formed with singer Pete Shoulder and rode to some success through a three album haul of classy, rich bluesy rock. Once Morley mozied on back to Thunder, Shoulder seemed to pretty much disappear with only the odd appearance on solo mode made from time to time.

Now the singer and guitarist has gathered together drummer Brian Tichy of Whitesnake, Ozzy and many more, and Phil X & The Drills bassist Daniel Spree to form the sharp as a tack Silverthorne. The trio announced themselves on the scene mid-2019 with the bulging riff of this EP’s title track and a mighty amalgam of Alter Bridge and Soundgarden it is too. With Shoulder’s imperious voice fully in control Tichy lays down a hi-hat driven beat and impales the deal home in some style.

Being completely honest “Roll Me Back Again”, while revealing a predilection for Zeppelin not apparent in the opener, maybe follows in too similar a suit but it’s undoubtedly a mesmerising thunder-chug. Rather oddly, but still rather satisfyingly, “Black River Rising” then answers the unasked question of what Black Sabbath might have sounded like with David Coverdale behind the mic, before the only real treading water moment on show, “Movin’” just kind of sits there. It’s not a bad cut by any means but then neither does it hit with anything like the authority of the other four tracks in evidence.

“Haunted By The Dawn” may then close things out in an all too obvious Zeppelin homage as Shoulder’s riff darts into view only to be curtailed by a clean strike of strings that shimmers and shakes in all the right ways, but it’s a doozy nonetheless. In fairness the chorus actually heads more into MKIII era Purple territory but by the time we’re into the guitar solo it’s Jimmy Page being mined for inspiration once more.

As five song introductions go Tear The Sky Wide Open is impressive, and as every good EP should, it also whets the appetite for a soon to be released full length release… hopefully.
