Elegy of Madness: Invisible World

For the uninitiated Elegy Of Madness is an Italian Symphonic Metal band which was founded in 2006 by Tony Tomasicchio. In the same year the first promo Another Path was released. In 2009 they unleashed their first album The Bridge Of Sighs and in 2013 Brave Dreams followed. 2017 saw the release of New Era and now we get Invisible World. Invisible World is a grower. The first few listens didn't grab me at all. It was only when I took the album for a walk in the coronavirus ridden air of northern England that the record's beauty was revealed to me.

It's an album that rewards the listener taking it in from start to finish as it's relatively complex in its instrumentation and feel. It's by no means happy clappy Freedom Call style fun, fun, fun. It is, to use the vernacular, quite epic and sweeping in its scope and features the divine (if sometimes low in the mix) vocals of Anja Irullo often juxtaposed against the growls of original band member Tony Tomasicchio and whilst the initial couple of songs have definite hints of early, but crucially not later, Delain the band gets into their own groove with Luca Basile being credited with cello and orchestra giving a lush sound especially on the Ayreon-like "Day One" which concludes and album which brings to mind adjectives such as 'bombastic,' 'haunting' and 'passionate.' In the grand scheme of things I'm not sure that the album will lift Elegy of Madness further up the league table than the likes of Edenbridge or Visions of Atlantis but Invisible World is a very pleasing effort.
