Ciolkowska: Tsiolkovskaya Showed Her Face (Eternal 16 08 16)
Ciolkowska is a rock band hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia. They released a debut EP in 2014, followed by their only full length effort titled Tsiolkovskaya Showed Her Face (Eternal 16 08 16) in 2016. Now I have no idea what the title actually means but as far as the music is concerned this is a pretty good eclectic psychedelic rock offering.
There are four tracks in total with three being ten minutes or more. The disc opens with "Eternal", a very moody piece beginning with cleanly picked guitar, with a hint of reverb and/or distortion. The tempo is slow to mid paced throughout and the guitar work gets quite edgy and very psychedelic. It really is a highlight here. Although quite an eclectic piece I found this to be pretty addictive. The vocals are relaxed and melodic and generally fit the moody soundscapes. Ukulele is also present which is pretty unusual in rock music. With “Gun of the Future” the band uses a liberal amount of weird effects and distorted guitar tones leading into a slowly plodding beat and more trippy guitar work. The pulsating effect on the guitar riffs is really cool adding to the trippy factor. Even the ukulele adds to the other worldly sounds. The weirdest track has to be “Young Pilots” consisting of mostly tripped out sound effects, spoken word, chanting and spacey atmospherics. The disc ends with the spacey psych of “Kirya Pistolzzz In The Future” featuring electronic pulses and general all out freakiness.
If you enjoy eclectic, tripped out music with a heavy dose of infused psychedelics you really should check this one out. I rather liked it.
