Hasselhoff, David: Open Your Eyes

No, this isn’t a review of Baywatch or The Knight Rider. That’s what came to mind when the new CD by David Hasselhoff arrived in the mail. I had no idea Hasselhoff performed "Looking For Freedom" atop the rubble of the then recently collapsed Berlin Wall. Or maybe I had just forgotten. He has also released fourteen studio albums, I really had no clue. No matter, Hasselhoff’s new disc is titled Open Your Eyes and commemorates the thirtieth anniversary of the Berlin Wall and what’s equally surprising are the musicians helping him out. Names like Elliot Easton (The Cars), Charlie Daniels (Charlie Daniels Band), Todd Rundgren (Utopia), James Williamson (The Stooges), Patrick Moraz (Yes/The Moody Blues) and Steve Stevens (Billy Idol) just to name a few.

The first track “Open Your Eyes”, originally done by The Lords Of The New Church is a pretty good listen. Hasselhoff’s lower end delivery is quite catchy and the angular guitar work courtesy of James Williamson is pretty cool. Elliot Easton adds some tasty guitar work to the very catchy pop of The Jesus and The Mary Chain track “Head On” and Steve Stevens’ fiery guitar brings new life to The Flock Of Seagull’s ‘80s classic “I Melt With You”. David Bowie’s “Heroes” is also a good choice with Hasselhoff’s voice interpreting Bowie very nicely. Half way through the German lyrics are a nice touch and totally fit the song. He even does an admirable job of Sinatra’s “That’s Life”, which is another unexpected surprise.

Nothing too deep here, just a fun new wave pop album that fans of ‘80s music should appreciate. Really, this is pretty good stuff.
