Fallen is the brand new Frontiers Records album from the project called Archon Angel, which features Savatage/Circle II Circle/TSO vocalist Zak Stevens, guitarist/producer Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere), bassist Yves Campion, drummer Marco Lazzarini, and keyboard player Antonio Agate. Though this one seemingly came out with little fanfare, it's notably for a lot of reasons, most importantly a new outlet for Stevens and his unmistakable vocals for all of those who miss the music of Savatage and Circle II Circle so much. Much of Fallen fits what we would expect from either of Zak's previous bands, the ten tracks here full of powerful melodic power & progressive metal, with plenty of crunchy riffing courtesy of Lonobile, sweeping keyboards from Agate, and tight, muscular rhythms. Zak as always sounds great, soaring over the top of some tumultuous riffs, blazing solos, and orchestral keys on the monster track "The Serpent, sounding forceful & melodic on the complex "Rise", and showing plenty of his still formidable range on excellent headbangers "Fallen", "Twilight", and the frantic "Hit the Wall". Some great textures to be found on the proggy "Who's in the Mirror", and the epic closer "Return of the Storm" is a wonderful slice of melodic, cinematic progressive metal, the keyboards high in the mix, the vocals commanding, and the guitar work superb. Fans of '90s Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra will love this one for sure.
Honestly, this one kind of came out of nowhere and has been a pleasant surprise. Basically, anything Zak Stevens touches is generally quite good, and Fallen from Archon Angel is no exception. Highly recommended!
