Art in America: Cloudborn

The Detroit band Art in America formed in the early ‘80s but was unknown to me at the time. Their self-titled debut was released in 1983 and then the band went silent. Well, they are back with Cloudborn, an album that spans three decades of recordings. Of note, the first three tracks has legendary bass player Tony Levin lending a hand so that cannot be a bad thing.

The first track “A Tale of the Unexpected” has an ‘80s synth pop vibe, vey melodic and well played with a smart use of voice samples. It evolves into a British sounding new wave track which I highly appreciate. The catchy keyboards and vocals in “I am I” is high end art pop and the gentle ballad “Someday” features lovely guitar arpeggios, lush but subdued orchestrations and pretty piano. The lead vocals are again very pleasing on the ears. The upbeat and super catchy “The New Swami” features some fine koto (a Japanese string instrument) and the irresistible earworm that is “Someone Called My Name” are a couple more highlights. The acoustic guitar in “For Shelly” adds some darker shades and the Floydy opening in “When We Were Young” are more favourite moments.

Cloudborn is a fine art pop/rock disc that I will be playing often in the months and years ahead. Recommended.
