I have often complained about the hyperbolic nature of press releases from some of the more obscure record companies and PR gurus but I'm not sure how I would feel if I played bass in Italian band Secret Rule given the following, “The band is fronted by the powerful and crystal clear vocals of Angela Di Vincenzo, masterminded by lead guitarist Andy Menario, with accurate bass playing of Michele Raspanti and the powerful drumming of Alex Beccati. Secret Rule on stage is a bomb of energy, a mix of heavy guitar riffs, with electronic elements and incredible keyboard lines. “ Imagine being Michele Raspanti and seeing everybody else getting exciting adjectives whilst you get described as 'accurate.' It's true but the powerful rhythm section of Raspanti and Alex Beccatit underpin what is a very strong album, the band's fifth.
The band have created a fine mix of Nightwish/Evanescence type modern metal with relentless energy and hunger. Occasionally a bit of industrial EDM pops up to keep things interesting and there's also a sense of commerciality on tunes like "Endless Promise" and "Purgatory". Against is an album which benefits from repeated listens as there's quite a lot going on in the background which enhances the super vocals of Angela Di Vincenzo who is the arguable MVP of the album but not by much.
