Unprocessed: Artificial Void

Here is an excellent band from Germany. Unprocessed formed in 2012 in Wiesbaden, Hessen and after a few line-up changes they settled in and released their debut titled In Concretion in 2014. In 2016 the band released the EP Perception (reviewed on this site) and in 2018 came their second full length platter titled Covenant. Their latest album Artificial Void was released in 2019 and it is an excellent disc.

The band incorporates lots of atmosphere and mood in their heavy dgent progressive metal attack. The riffs may be slow or at breakneck speed, and mainly very clean. These guys are outstanding musicians. Lots of moody effects and electronics, which I presume to be guitar are quite impressive. You would swear the band uses keyboards, they are really able to generate some cool sounds.

The disc begins with the very impressive “Prototype” where a disjointed soundscape merges with wild rhythms and a super-fast tempo. Vocals are both clean and guttural and are very well done. I do prefer the mellower clean delivery better but the intense vocals do offer a nice contrast in sound. A moody sound design, trippy effects and superb guitar riffs highlight the title track before we get to one of my favourites on the album. “Ruins” is just an excellent track. A half sung/half spoken vocal and pulsating notes (likely guitar) develops into a deep groove where the bass is just so good. The vocals are catchy and clean and the band’s tight musicianship gives this one a very progressive sound. Heavy and light is what you will here on “Fear” highlighted by another catchy chorus and stellar guitar work.

Artificial Void is a very strong set of songs with great playing from all involved. It’s pretty catchy too so this one will have some staying power with me.

A highly recommended release courtesy of Long Branch Records.
