Grand Massive: 4

On Grand Massive’s fourth album, the band expands their songwriting skills and increases their speed. For those worried this means a new direction, don’t worry any longer. This is still the Grand Massive you’ve enjoyed in the past, only now they’re tweaking their sound just enough to be a little faster, a little heavier, and a little more complex. I especially liked the faster tempo of “Devourer of Time,” an almost-thrash song that has an impressive and blistering guitar solo. You’ve heard faster songs from other bands, but Grand Massive did a nice job going fast while also sounding like themselves. Another interesting experiment was “Never Gone,” a tribute to fallen metal musicians that weaves in bits and pieces of songs by other bands. I could have done without all the soundclips about each death, mostly because an extended section like that can fall flat or even sound heavy handed. Fortunately, the band pulled it off neatly, paying tribute to some major players without overdoing it. As good as those tracks were, I thought the best tracks were those that just showed off the band’s signature sound. “Black Empress” was a straightforward rocker that showed off the band’s knack for the heavy, the melodic, and the chuggy. I also liked “Recurrence” and “Poisoned Bait,” tracks that added a little more sludge to the overall sound. It’s no wonder this band has shared the stage with bands like Overkill and Crowbar. They comfortably play a style that shifts between various styles without watering any of them down. Check out “Poisoned Bait” and “Devourer of Time” and see what you think. This is a solid new release.
