Death the Leveller: II

From Dublin, Ireland comes Death the Leveller and their latest album for Cruz Del Sur, simply titled II. Featuring current & former members of Primordial and Mael Mórdha, II is full of epic, doom laden tracks with a gothic vibe. Opening track "The Hunt Eternal" has the biggest Primordial influence here, from the mournful vocals all the way to the textured, epic riffing, and it's followed by the 12+ minute "The Golden Bough", another ponderous, doomy number with some fine vocals courtesy of Denis Dowling. "So They May Face the Rising Sun" has more of an alt-rock feel, but still drifting along at the same pace as the previous two tracks, and II concludes with "The Crossing", a yearning rocker that is part doom, part early Pearl Jam/Alice in Chains with its anguished vocal and heavy riffs.

To be honest, there's really nothing bad you can say about II, other than it's really lacking any kind of variety and it almost seems like one long song. Death the Leveller are a talented bunch, but I would have liked to have seen them mix things up just a little bit more here with some different tempos, which I think would have made an otherwise solid enough album even better.
