Astralborne: Eternity’s End
Astralborne developed shortly after Hammer Horde dropped their third album and Jayson Cessna (drums) and Derik Smith (guitars) decided to do something a little different from the Viking-themed fare of their main band. Joining with Paul Fuzinski (bass, vocals), Cessna and Smith developed a project that drew on the heaviest components of death, black, and thrash metal to very impressive results. The band’s debut was initially self-released in 2019, but the band was quickly snatched up by Prosthetic Records who is only now releasing the album to a wider audience. They were right to take a risk on these guys. The band is clearly having fun writing songs that weave in melodic passages with real heaviness. The band is obviously paying tribute to the sounds and styles they love while also pushing the limits of aggression and heaviness in their own ways.
My favorite track was “Architect of Suffering,” possibly because it made me think about how funny it would be if an architecture firm used that title instead of “employee of the month.” Putting my dorky humor aside, I have to say that the song really shows off all this band’s strengths. If you find that you like that one, too, be sure to check out the title track as well as “Inglorious 20XX” and “Paragon Amiss.” I also enjoyed “Reflections,” a very calm and peaceful instrumental that technically ends the album. “Hell Patrol,” the bonus track, was solid.
This is a very impressive release from a band that I hope will bring out some more music soon. Their heavy sound and their melodic sensibilities work together perfectly and all three musicians clearly have the chops to pull it all off well. Highly Recommended.
