DC Sound Collective: Darjeeling Wireless
I have reviewed no less than six albums from DC Sound Collective, led by multi-instrumentalist Daniel Crommie (has released no less than twenty-four solo albums since 1978). The band formed in 2011 and have just released their eighth full length album titled Darjeeling Wireless. I have come to appreciate the band’s experimental nature and combination of natural and electronic sounds.
The first track “Mizuna” is pretty cool as some bizarre effects and world flavoured drums and percussion lead into interesting keys and guitar. It’s an effective opening track. “Skulls” has a more new age sound with nice keys and electronics. Subtle percussion, flute and effects begin “Buddha Stamp” in a mellow fashion before an excellent muted guitar solo has the band rocking pretty hard. One of my favourite tracks. Another rocking tune is the slightly angular “Sabre” where squelching guitar lines lead us straight to the 1970’s. The weird but relaxing “Tsuki no Usagi” and the trippy psychedelics in “Gravitas”, including robotized vocals are more good tracks.
With its combination of psychedelic, jazz, world, electronic, new age and rock, Darjeeling Wireless is quite an eclectic and diverse offering from a band that has given me lots of enjoyment through the years.
The band is:
Daniel Crommie (flutes, keyboards, electric dulcimer, drums, percussion, harmonica, samples, vocals)
Eldon Hardenbrook (bass, keyboards, electric guitars, drums, samples, vocals)
Bruce Hazen (electric guitars, synth)
Colin Henson (electric guitars)
