Crommie, Daniel: VIA

Multi-instrumentalist Daniel Crommie released his debut album Skeletons in 1978. Roughly twenty-seven albums later he brings us his latest release titled VIA. As we have come to expect Crommie plays all instruments including; flutes, analogue and digital synthesizers, conch shell, sundry percussion, samples, electric dulcimer, psaltery, panpipes and Mellotron.

On VIA Crommie presents the listener with an amalgamation of sounds and textures, mixing electronic and acoustic instrumentation with an expert touch. The first track “Abandoned Borders” combines various percussion, flute and electronics, a sort of new age progginess with lovely Mellotron choirs (at least that’s what they sound like to me). Some deeper rumblings simmer along the surface in an understated way. With “The Outpost Sentinel” one gets the feeling of outer space, especially the otherworldly synths and flutes entwining through the soundscape. Some of the distorted swirling synths reminded me of something Floyd might have conceived. Alan Parsons also came to mind. It’s a relaxing piece, one to just chill out to. More trippiness can be heard on the more experimental “Little Slices Of Time”, another voyage into unknown realms. The dulcimer is used extensively here and the electronic samples are extremely well placed. Just a really cool freaky track.

It’s this foray into organic and electronic that Crommie does so well and makes his music so very interesting. VIA is well worth a listen for those seeking music of a more experimental and at times tranquil nature.

VIA is a digital only release.
