Sometimes you have no choice but to separate the artist from the music. Such is the case with Michael Schenker, the much-maligned guitarist for UFO and his own eponymous group who's prone to tantrums and other unprofessional misconduct. On Thank You 2, the sequel to the instrumental acoustic guitar album Schenker self-released in the early Nineties and rereleased last year through SPV/Steamhammer, the former Scorpion lets his guitar - not his mouth - do the talking.
Given the caliber of mood-setting songs on this record, as well as the newfound energy displayed on the Michael Schenker Group's surprisingly impressive Be Aware of Scorpions CD last year, the man could be gearing up for a respectable return. Such tracks as "Between You and Me," "The Greatness In You," "Born to Overcome" and "My Life With You" demonstrate that Schenker can be a sensitive guy. No track on Thank You 2 is so complex that it sounds like it should come from a practitioner of rock 'n' roll guitar for more than two decades. But in this context, no track needs to sound that way. This music is ideal for those late and breezy summer evenings when life feels just about right.
