Talinka: Rainbow Over Kolonaki
Talinka is a band I was not familiar with until I came across their sophomore album titled Rainbow Over Kolonaki, the follow upon to their self-titled 2017 debut. In the band are Tali Atzmon (vocals, ukulele), Gilad Atzmon (bass clarinet, soprano sax, accordion), Yaron Stavi (double bass) and Jenny Bliss Bennett (viola da gamba, flute, baroque violin, vocals).
Talinka presents the listener a mixture of jazz, folk and ethnic, infused with lush violin and featuring some truly impressive lead vocals. It’s a peaceful offering, one that needs to be really ‘listened’ to, in order to reveal all its hidden secrets.
The first track “Rainbow” begins with perhaps sounds of a country fair before a piano and viola begin the piece in earnest. It’s a mixture of jazz and folk with an Eastern motif with many moving parts and melodies. The tempo speeds up before the song reaches a cacophonic conclusion. The beginning saxophone and slow gliding vocals in “If I Should Lose You” is transfixing and when the intimate violin enters, well, it’s true bliss. The sax and violin take playful turns with one another exhibiting some gorgeous interplay. The English folk of “She Moved Through The Fair” features gentle ukulele and a lilting vocal while the Sinatra penned “I’m A Fool To Want You” is treated with great care and respect. Another highlight has to be the rendition of “Greensleeves” taking the standard to new heights while keeping the original melody intact.
Rainbow Over Kolonaki is a nice mellow jazz/folk album, richly detailed and crafted with the care and attention these genres demand.
A Fanfare Records release.
