Way, Darryl: Destinations

Darryl Way, co-founder of the eclectic progressive rock band Curved Air has been releasing albums at a steady pace recently with Myths, Legends And Tales (2016), Vivaldi’s Four Seasons In Rock (2018) and his most recent effort titled Destinations (2020).

Way refers to his most recent endeavors as ‘programme music’, meaning “music that evokes atmospheres and impressions.” Joining Way (violin, guitar) are Pete Skinner (drums) and Richard Mead (bass). The trio has put together a nice rock album beginning with the first track “Downtown LA” with its clean guitar work, nicely placed effects and excellent violin. The clanking machinery sounds in the quickly paced “Metropolis” rings true of the big city as the violins swirl and the guitar offers more distorted sounds. I think the tune captures the inner workings of the city quite well and there is certainly a proggy factor in this one. Way’s lovely violin leads the way in the more moody “The Stars” invoking a rather celestial feel accented with some pretty spacey keyboards. The sweeping and somewhat wistful “The Wild West” and the gorgeously rich violin tones in the slow moving “A Rainy Day In Vienna” are more good tracks. The guitar solo in the latter is quite tasty, showcasing Way’s multi-talented approach. The festive melody in “The Restless City” is another winner.

Destinations is quite a varied orchestral rock album and of all the recent Way Offerings I enjoy this one the most. I think both guitar and violin fans have reason to dig into this one a little further.
