Guarino Savoldelli Quintet: Core ‘ngrato

I said in my review of Boris Savoldelli’s solo album Biocosmopolitan he is ‘a unique vocal talent’. I still stand by those words. I might add anyone who tackles Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon must be either crazy or tremendously talented or maybe even a mixture of both. I’m referring to Savoldelli’s The Great Jazz Gig In The Sky, an ambitious effort to be sure.

On this new album titled Core ‘ngrato Savoldelli has surrounded himself with some top notch players including Corrado Guarino (piano, arrangements), Guido Bombardieri (alto saxophone, clarinet), Tito Mangialajo Rantzer (contrabass) and Stefano Bertoli (drums).

On the album opener “Scalinatella”, Savoldelli’s dramatic Italian vocals lead the way through a smoky slow groove where piano and sax add the necessary colour before the band really starts to cook with fire. The next track “So’ le sorbe e le nespole amare” has piano and sax playfully interacting before the band makes room for a marvelous bass solo. These cats are tremendous musicians. Smooth sax and brushed drums adds a romantic vibe to “Cicerenella nordica contemporanea” while Savoldelli’s vocal performance in the rather intense “Tammurriata nera” is pretty off the wall. The rhythm section of Bertoli and Rantzer really earn their keep here as their playing is pretty stunning as is Guarino’s piano solo.

This is quite an eclectic jazz album from these Italians and well worth hearing, especially if you are a fan of Savoldelli’s varied vocal approach. Recommended.
