Reuter, Markus: Truce
You got to hand it to MoonJune Records for keeping adventurous music alive and for their one hundredth release they present Markus Reuter’s Truce, featuring a fantastic power prog trio that will absolutely blow your mind. Alongside Reuter (touch guitars, live looping) we have Fabio Trentini (Wal fretless bass, bass synthesizer) and Asaf Sirkis (acoustic drums). You may be familiar with Reuter as he has worked with King Crimson ProjeK(t), Stick Men and the Devin Townsend Project or as a solo artist. No matter what band or project he is involved with, Reuter has shown he is an absolute monster on the guitar. His new album is no exception and this trio is up to the challenge.
This is one of those albums that might take some time to fully appreciate. The moody soundscapes and edgy guitar exploits form an intoxicating mixture of eclectic prog and fusion that reveals itself the more you listen. Reuter’s biting guitar chords and solos are as adventurous as they come, often rising through layers of synth and sinuous bass lines. Speaking of bass, Trentini’s tone is as sumptuous as it gets adding a warmth to the sometimes icy cold shards of guitar. All the while Sirkis supplies the back end with tricky complexities and steady beats and grooves. The trio plays marvelously together, very tight and loose at the same time, allowing each other the freedom to play without constraints, the creativity oozes from each and every track.
I am not going to describe each song as this is an album best served on headphones in one sitting so make sure you have sixty-two minutes of uninterrupted listening to reap the full benefits this music provides. Absolutely recommended.
