Perdomo, Fernando: Out To Sea 3 - The Storm

Fernando Perdomo is a veteran of the LA music scene with seven solo albums to his credit. He has worked with a number of artists and is likely most familiar to progressive rock fans for his work on Dave Kerzner’s solo albums New World and Static, both exceptional discs. He also played guitar on Kerzner’s In Continuum project, which I have not heard as of yet. His latest disc Out To Sea 3 " The Storm is the third in the Out To Sea triptych and the first album I have heard from the trilogy. This album has been a revelation for me, it is that good.

The first track “Out To Sea 3 Theme” begins with the sound of waves lapping on the shore and a gentle acoustic guitar. It’s a gorgeous melody with dreamy keyboards and more clean acoustic guitar. It’s a nice track to just sit back to and let the music wash over you. Languid keys and guitar begin “Wonder”, where a psychedelic feel pervades as the guitar soars, a very Floydian soundscape here. The keys and guitar start to swirl creating some really cool textures and the dark laden effects are utilized to great effect. Excellent fret work highlights the proggy instrumental “Cycles” and the acoustic guitar work in the following track “The Storm” is really quite sublime. Perdomo is as adept on the acoustic guitar as he is on the electric. The easy flowing “The Great Known” is another great track reminding me of Steely Dan. There are six more tunes filled with many more wondrous moments from this exceptionally gifted musician.

After listening to this album a number of times it just keeps on getting better. Truly the mark of an excellence. Thus, this one earns the highly recommended tag with ease.

Perdomo, Fernando: Out To Sea 3 - The Storm

My Score:

This third entry to the Out to Sea series is an excellent listen, but a step below the previous entry. I didn't find this album as satisfying as the second entry in the series, but then I thought the second entry was a ten out of ten. So this album is still well worth having. But perhaps it is time for Perdomo to find a different inspiration for his next effort.
