Sky Cries Mary: Secrets of a Red Planet

It’s been many years since we have heard from U.S. band Sky Cries Mary. Their last disc was a live effort released in 2011 and my first and only exposure to the band. Well, fast forward to 2020 and their new album Secrets of a Red Planet. The revamped band lineup is:

Roderick Wolgamott (lead vocals, lyrics, design)
Ben Ireland (drums, percussion, keyboards, synths)
Jack Endino (guitars, drums on track #2)
Kevin Whitworth (guitars)
Curt Eckman (bass, Moog)
Debra Reese (vocals, synth, tambo)

I have to say, psychedelic and spacey music has been taking up much of my time lately and in that regard this album hits all the right buttons beginning with the opening track “”Waves Of Mourning”. Eerie and spacey effects take hold around a slowly evolving guitar riff. The song builds into heavier realms and the vocals, both male and female are outstanding having a kind of deadpan deliver that plays well with the band’s psychedelic sound. “Die Of Laughter”, the disc’s longest track at over twelve minutes, features more spacey and psych elements. The guitar riffs and keyboards really encapsulate the space rock sound. “Intermezzo” is more of a collage of disparate elements, never quite coalescing which further adds to the tripped out sound. “Trapeze Dancer” is set at a faster pace with a crisper drum beat and catchy vocals. The last two tracks; “Drunken Pilot” and “Born From My Mouth” both contain super trippy instrumentation with the latter forging into slightly heavier territory. A really tripped out psychedelic tale, which really can be said of the entire album.

For those into psychedelic and spacey music Secrets of a Red Planet should be mandatory listening. Excellent stuff!

A Trail Records release.
